Living in the US workshops

The Community Integration Initiative presents Living in the US workshops series dedicated to provide orientation and information to immigrants on the US system, helping them adjust to their new home. We know that it is not easy to learn about a new place when people move in. When people come to a new place they feel a lot of pressure to learn many new things, adapting to a completely different world from what hey previously have known. Learning about the US System is essential for ones successful adaptation.

The wellbeing of the family is a major concern and since working families continue to move to the region, the first workshop series was dedicated to the Challenges of Raising the Immigrant Child. In 2008 and 2009 the Initiative held 3 workshops on the topic. Events took place in Glenwood Springs, Basalt and Rifle. Over 60 people were able to address their concerns and get valuable insight from presenters that included representatives from Youth Zone, Roaring Fork Pre-collegiate Program, Pitkin County Sheriff, Garfield County Human Services, and many more! We want to thank the presenters, the interpreters and audience for taking the time to show up and trade questions and ideas about the critical issue of the raising the multicultural youth of our valleys, which has profound implications for the long-term health of our Aspen-to-Parachute community.

Our series in 2009 of orientation workshops was focusing on Health Education and Diseases Prevention. We held 2 workshops in 2010. Presenters included representatives from Grand River Hospital District, Garfield County Public Health, Mountain Family Health Centers, Planned Parenthood, Comfort Dental, Colorado West Counseling Services. They talked on topics such as tobacco prevention, sexually transmitted diseases, dental health, mental health, drug abuse prevention, cancer prevention and treatment, and also focusing on where people can find help.
